Sumario de la Expediciòn:

Un equipo de escaladores de Córdoba, Argentina abrirán una nueva ruta desde la cara Oeste del Monte Pissis e intentaràn alcanzar su cumbre. El grupo documentarà toda la travesìa con fotografìas, filmaciones y mapas en GPS (Geo Posicionador Satelital). Ellos atravesaràn y documentaràn el Glaciar Oeste, uno de los mas importantes glaciares de toda la regiòn de la Puna de Atacama, recolectando informaciòn para futuros estudios sobre el cambio climàtico en la zona. Al alcanzar la cumbre utilizaràn los sistemas de mediciòn para agregar màs informaciòn al debate existente sobre la altura definitiva del volcàn.

En colaboraciòn con el artista residente en Vancouver, K.A.Colorado, ellos llevaràn una pequeña escultura hasta la cima y la enterraràn en la montaña. El grupo regresarà con una pequeña parte de sedimentos del volcan los cuales seràn incorporados a la proxima pieza del artista; quien desarrolla su trabajo mayormente alrededor de la temàtica de la conservaciòn y del cambio climàtico.

Expedition Summary:

A team of climbers from Córdoba, Argentina, will open a new route from the West face of Mount Pissis and will attempt the summit. The team will document the whole expedition with still photography, video and GPS mapping. They will hike through the Western Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Puna de Atacama region documenting it and collecting information that will be used for further studies about climate change in the area. Upon reaching the summit, the climbers will measure the peak with the GPS, to add more information to the debate about the definitive height of the volcano.

In collaboration with Vancouver based artist K.A. Colorado, they will bring a small sculpture to the top an intern it in the mountain. The group will return with a small amount of sediment which will be incorporated into the artist's next piece.

Antecedentes:

El Monte Pissis es un estratovolcàn inactivo ubicado en la Puna de Atacama en Argentina. Es uno de los tres picos mas altos del Hemisferio Occidental junto con el Ojos del Salado (otro volcan) y el Cerro Aconcagua. Aconcagua es indiscutidamente la montaña mas alta.Existe un gran debate, sin embargo, sobre a cuàl de los dos, Ojos del salado o Pissis corresponde la segunda altura. La importancia de cuàl de estos dos picos es el mas alto va mas allà de ocupar el segundo lugar entre las tres mayores alturas del hemisferio; el mas alto de los dos resultarà ser tambièn el volcan mas alto del mundo.

La vertiente Oeste se encuentra ocupada en gran parte por uno de glaciares mas grandes e imponentes de la regiòn de la Puna de Atacama: el Glaciar Oeste. Este glaciar permanece virtualmente inexplorado y es camino inevitable en la ruta hacia la cumbre partiendo desde la base occidental.

Background:

Mt. Pissis is an inactive stratovolcano in the Atacama desert of Argentina. It is one of the three highest peaks in the Western Hemisphere along with Ojos del Salado (another volcano) and Cerro Aconcagua. Aconcagua is indisputably the highest mountain. There is much debate, however, as to whether the second highest peak belongs to Pissis or Ojos del Salado.

The significance of which peak is higher goes beyond second place among the three highest peaks in the Western Hemisphere: the higher of the two volcanoes will also lay claim as the highest volcano in the world.
The West side of the mountain presents the great surface of one of the largest glaciers of the Atacama region: the West Glacier. This remains virtually unexplored although it is inevitable that the team cross it on the way to the summit from the western base side.

Area:

El Monte Pissis esta situado en el desierto de altura del Noroeste Argentino en la frontera entre las provincias de Catamarca y La Rioja. A la cara Noreste se accede a travès de un camino originariamente abierto para mineria y tambièn es acceso hacia otras montañas. La cara Oeste, sin embargo, permanece virtualmente inexplorada. El àrea no presenta aparentes signos de vida alguna. Ningùn camino conduce al Oeste ya que no existe un destino que justifique tal medio. No existen registros de expediciòn alguna que intentara la cumbre del Monte Pissis por la cara Oeste.

Area:

Mt. Pissis is located in the high altitude desert of northwest Argentina along the borders of the Catamarca and La Rioja provinces. The east side is accessible from a road originally built to access mining and other mountains. The west side, however, is virtually unexplored. The area is barren with no apparent signs of life. No road leads to the west, as there is no destination to warrant it. There are no records of an expedition attempting to summit Mt. Pissis from the west side.

• Establecer y nombrar un campamento base para este y otros intentos a cumbre por el Oeste.
• Alcanzar la cumbre del Monte Pissis.
• Documentar todos los aspectos de la expediciòn utilizando:
  -Fotografias y video.
  -GPS y cartografìa.
  -llevando un diario/blog
• Regresar a casa sanos y salvos.
• Explorar el Glaciar Oeste.
• Promover el àrea ante otras expediciones y escaladores de todo el mundo.

Expedition Goals:

• Explore unknown territory.
• Establish and name the base camp for this and future summit approaches from the west side.
• Attempt a summit of Mt. Pissis
• Document all aspects of expedition using:
  -still photography and video
  - GPS mappings
  - daily journalling/ blogging
• Get home safely.
• Explore the Western Glacier
• Promote area to climbing groups around the world.
